What is a Pique Polo?
Last Updated: 02/06/2014
As we all know, polo shirts come in a variety of styles. A pique polo shirt is simply a polo shirt constructed of close-textured fabric (usually cotton, silk, or spun rayon) woven with lengthwise ribs or cords. A traditional polo takes on the traits of a normal shirt - solid fabric and solid look. The word "pique" is also referred to as marcella with the weave styling being associated with white tie events because of the fabric's ability to hold more starch thus creating a stiffer shirt front.

Pique fabrics can be woven into an array of patterns like waffle, cord, birdseye, and honeycomb piques. They also require additional yarns called stuffer yarns - woven into the back of the fabric to give a garment added depth and texture. The picture below gives us an example of how pique fabric can be woven into different designs.

Pique polo shirts are very popular in today's fashion and make excellent tops for activities like golf or simply relaxing around the house.
